Wines from Rioja welcomed over 600 members of the UK wine trade to its inaugural tasting on 9th October. The tasting marked the first occasion Rioja wineries had come together generically in the UK, and represented the biggest collection of Rioja wines ever shown under one roof in the UK.
Attendees were drawn from all sectors of the trade, with sommeliers, supermarket buyers, independent merchants, importers, agents, and press all strongly represented. A large delegation from the Spanish Embassy, including His Excellency Federico Trillo Figueroa, the Spanish Ambassador also attended the event at OXO2 on London’s Southbank.
Key personnel from nearly 100 wineries already present in the UK and importers of Rioja wine hosted tables at the event, while in a separate “wineries without importers zone” buyers were connected with a further 19 wineries seeking representation in this market.
Over 650 wines were available to taste at the event, with a myriad of lesser-known varietals and styles of Rioja wine sharing the stage with traditional Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva wines. Around 15% of the wines available to taste were white, highlighting the growing significance of this category, with a broad range of styles from crisp modern styles, through to traditional barrel-fermented and oak-aged wines, as well as several monovarietal Malvasía and Tempranillo Blancos. The diversity of the red category also stood out, with over fifty monovarietal Graciano, Garnacha, and Maturana wines available to taste, alongside traditional and modern Tempranillo styles.
Lottie West, senior account director for Wines from Rioja in the UK, and organiser of the event commented, “we were delighted with the success of the first Wines from Rioja trade tasting. The exceptionally high level of engagement from wineries, with 118 represented, reflects that there was a genuine appetite for bringing such an event to London, while the high turnout of visitors indicates the continued enthusiasm for the category amongst the UK trade. We are already looking forward to making the event even bigger and better in 2014!”
Jose Luis Lapuente, General Manager for the Consejo Regulador DOCa Rioja added; “The UK is our largest market and is of key strategic importance to us. Feedback on our inaugural trade tasting from exhibitors and visitors alike has been overwhelmingly positive, with numbers far exceeding our expectations, and demonstrating the importance of developing an annual focal point for the Rioja category.”
