SEPTEMBER 2013

OVER 100 RIOJA WINERIES TO JOIN INAUGURAL UK TRADE TASTING

Over 100 Rioja wineries will showcase a diverse range of over 650 red, white, and rosé wines at Wines from Rioja’s inaugural UK trade tasting on 9th October 2013. This occasion marks the first time Rioja wineries have exhibited generically in the UK, and represents the biggest collection of Rioja wines ever shown under one roof.

Key personnel from nearly 90 wineries already present in the UK and importers of Rioja wine will host tables at the event, while a further 20 wineries without UK representation will be available to taste in a separate “wineries without importers zone", connecting buyers with wineries not currently distributed in this market.

Alongside traditional Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva wines, the tasting will also shine a light on a myriad of lesser-known varietals and styles of Rioja wine. Over 100 white wines will be available to taste, including two 100% Malvasía and three 100% Tempranillo Blanco wines, with many more blends including these varietals. Among the reds, over 20 wines from 100% Graciano, and over 30 with a Garnacha majority will be represented, along with four wines made from 100% Maturana. Rounding off the offering will be 41 rosé wines.

Four themed focus tables will further highlight the diversity of the region’s wines, with an exciting line-up chosen according to the following themes: White Rioja - everything from fresh and crisp, through to barrel-fermented and oak-aged; Beyond Tempranillo – reds made without Tempranillo – everything from Garnacha, to Graciano and Maturana; Gran Reserva – a vertical tasting of Rioja Gran Reserva wines from vintages rated “excellent” over the last 20 years; Rioja in Retail – a diverse collection of Rioja wines with nationwide retail availability, showcasing to the press the highlights of Rioja available in retail.

Ricardo Aguiriano, marketing director for the Consejo Regulador DOCa Rioja commented; “there is great excitement in Rioja to be bringing the region’s wines to London on a scale never seen before. The genuine enthusiasm and appetite for such an event is reflected in the exceptionally high number of wineries taking part. We’re all looking forward to welcoming the UK press and trade to the tasting in October, and we’re sure that all visitors will relish the opportunity to taste so many Rioja wines, and meet so many of the faces behind the wines.”

The Wines from Rioja UK Trade Tasting takes place on Wednesday 9th October at OXO2, Southbank. Members of the press and UK wine trade can register now for the Wines from Rioja UK Trade Tasting at www.riojatasting.co.uk.
