2013 Rioja sales reached 277 million litres, surpassing the all-time record before the downturn
· Rising exports were complemented by the first positive change in Spanish market trends.
· Investments in promotion are decisive in positioning the Rioja brand in international markets.
The positive development of Rioja wine sales in 2013, —which totalled 277,167,280 million litres, a 3.98% growth over the previous year— enabled the wine region to break the all-time sales record achieved before the financial crisis. Continued growth in exports over the past four years, was reinforced in 2013 by the first positive change in sales trends in the Spanish market since 2008.
Despite financial difficulties in the majority of countries, Rioja has demonstrated its ability to penetrate key markets, —undoubtedly due to widespread recognition of the quality of the wines which are seen today as a sure value for consumers around the world. Specialising in oak barrel-aged wines has allowed the wine region to position itself in higher, value-added, price points, while promotional investments have been decisive in consolidating the recognition of the Rioja brand.
