Visit to Rioja with Independent Retailers
In March, Wines from Rioja hosted a trip to the Rioja region for 20 independent retailers from across the UK.
Over three days, through a combination of winery visits and showcase tastings held at the Consejo, the group tasted wines from over 60 wineries, allowing them the opportunity to explore the variety and quality of Rioja wines.
Rioja’s strong gastronomic heritage was also there to be discovered and the retailers were introduced to range of regional specialities – including deep fried lamb’s ears!
The retailers were split into two groups – here is one of the groups at Finca Valpiedra with the river Ebro and the Sierra Cantabria mountains providing a scenic backdrop.
Meanwhile, the other group learnt about the terroir at Bodega La Emperatriz.
A tapas crawl on the famous Calle Laurel resulted in the battle of the mushrooms with the two groups presented with two different, but very delicious versions!
And here’s one group testing a Rioja and deep-fried lamb’s ears pairing!
Finally, the main focus of the trip might have been Rioja wine, but at the Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture, retailers also enjoyed some modern art – this original Picasso is one of the museum’s most prized exhibits:
