Wines from Rioja teams up with the London Wine Fair and Wine Intelligence to explore on-trade trends
It won’t come as a surprise to foodies to learn that Spanish cuisine has never been hotter. Since Ferran Adrià, Juan Mari Arzak, and their contemporaries burst onto the scene to worldwide acclaim, collecting a raft of Michelin stars, Spain has firmly cemented its position on the cutting edge of gastronomy.
And this prestige at the top-end, together with the emerging consumer affinity for informal dining has led to tapas becoming THE key dining trend of recent years. While the concept of tapas is nothing new – dating back hundreds of years – the explosion of tapas bars showcasing simple but authentic produce has been a key success story in the UK on-trade in recent years.
A 2014 global study by the Basque Culinary Centre (BCC) with the Consejo Regulador DOCa Rioja (Rioja Regulatory Board) demonstrated the opportunity for wine producers to capitalise on this trend, with 77% of experts surveyed naming wine as a core element of the tapas bar experience, with lists in these outlets averaging around 70 SKUs.
The study revealed that the key to the success of tapas bars outside of Spain was rooted in quality and authenticity of produce and dishes, with both of these factors overindexing amongst experts surveyed. This is also reflected in the wine offering, where Rioja, Spain’s flagship quality wine region, plays an integral role, accounting for over a quarter of reds and nearly 10% of whites sold through these outlets. Home to a tapas culture dating back generations, Rioja produces a diverse range of reds, whites, and rosés, renowned for their affinity for pairing with food.
Given Rioja’s pivotal role in the on-trade, Wines from Rioja has this year teamed up with the London Wine Fair and Wine Intelligence to explore consumer behaviour, attitudes and motivations in this sector. The research, as part of the Carpe Vinum project is set to be unveiled at the London Wine Fair, which takes place at London’s Olympia from 18th – 20th May. The Carpe Vinum report will be available to collect at the Fair, and key findings will also be presented at an industry briefing on Tuesday 19th May at 10:30am at the London Wine Fair.
