WINES FROM RIOJA ANNOUNCES NEW INITIATIVES TO CELEBRATE EXCELLENCE IN THE CATEGORY

Wines from Rioja is introducing two new and exciting activities this autumn with the launch of its inaugural Rioja 10 by 10 list - a selection of 100 of the region's top wines by an expert panel - and Rioja Recognises, the region's first awards event celebrating Rioja’s leading supporters from the UK. Rioja 10 by 10 will be presented at a trade tasting in London on Tuesday 10th November, with Rioja Recognises taking place the same evening. These activities form part of Rioja's drive to celebrate excellence, from the wines produced right through to the region’s advocates here in the UK.

Rioja 10 by 10 will showcase 100 wines at a tasting for the UK’s wine industry on Tuesday 10th November at a central London location. Each wine at the tasting will have been blind tasted by an expert panel and selected to demonstrate both excellence and diversity within ten Rioja categories. The panel of industry experts – from all corners of the wine trade – will have blind tasted the wines by category to determine a top ten within each section. These wines will then be presented to the trade at Rioja 10 by 10. Ten categories have been chosen to illustrate the wide-range and quality found in the region: 1. Unoaked whites; 2. Oaked whites; 3. Rosado; 4. Unusual wines; 5. Generic wines over £15; 6. Crianza; 7. Reserva; 8. Gran Reserva; 9. Wineries seeking representation; 10. Red made from non-Tempranillo varieties. 

Rioja 10 by 10 will be followed in the evening by Rioja Recognises, an awards event celebrating Rioja’s industry supporters in the UK’s wine trade. Accolades will cover a number of categories and focus on outstanding contributions made to growing awareness and affinity for the region amongst consumers.

The launch of Rioja 10 by 10 and Rioja Recognises comes off the back of a successful year for Rioja, with the region's Control Board announcing a record year for sales globally in 2014.  Here in the UK as well, Rioja has seen value growth increase by 9.9%, outpacing the wider UK market and accounting for 4% of the value of the UK market.[1] In addition to this, a poll carried out by Wine Intelligence in May found that Rioja is the number one still wine region in terms of conversion in the on-trade and is over 10 percentage points ahead of its nearest rivals Beaujolais.

initiatives. The Rioja Recognises awards are a fantastic chance for us to highlight key contributions made by the UK’s on-trade over the last twelve months.”

Rioja 10 by 10 and Rioja Recognises will be supported throughout the autumn by activity across the trade including Rioja tastings with independent merchants, sommelier trips to the region and the return of the Shop Rioja promotion which encourages retailers to promote Rioja wines.

Rioja 10 by 10 will take place biennially, alternating with the larger Rioja Grand Tasting.
