WINES FROM RIOJA PRESENTS TOP 100 RIOJA WINES AT 10 X 10 TASTING
On Tuesday 10th November, 260 members of the UK wine trade gathered at Banking Hall to taste the top 100 Rioja wines, specially selected by an expert panel, at the Rioja 10 x 10 trade tasting.
The 100 wines on show were selected from over 400 wines which were tasted blind earlier this year by a distinguished panel of twelve experts including wine buyers, writers and specialists, chaired by Tim Atkin MW and Sarah Jane Evans MW.
Ten finalists from each category were then presented at a tasting at Banking Hall to illustrate thewide-range and quality found in the region: 1. Unoaked whites; 2. Oaked whites; 3. Rosado; 4. Unusual wines; 5. Generic wines over £15; 6. Crianza; 7. Reserva; 8. Gran Reserva; 9. Wineries seeking representation; 10. Red made from non-Tempranillo varieties.
The tasting was followed in the evening by Rioja Recognises, an awards event celebrating Rioja’s industry supporters in the UK’s wine trade. Accolades went to Olly Smith for Communicator of the Year, leading Spanish chef José Pizarro for On-Trade Personality of the Year, Laithwaite’s Beth Willard for Off-Trade Personality of the Year, Matthew Clark’s Simon Jerrome for Distributor of the Year, and Tim Atkin MW and Sarah Jane Evans MW for their Outstanding Contribution to the Rioja category.
Ricardo Aguiriano, Marketing Director for the Consejo Regulador comments: “Rioja 10 x 10 has allowed us to explore and demonstrate the quality and diversity the Rioja region has to offer has to offer in its
wines. The UK is a very important market for us, even more so after the spectacular growth we have experienced in the country over recent years, so we were delighted to host the Rioja 10 by 10 tasting in London this year.”
The launch of both Rioja 10 by 10 and Rioja Recognises comes off the back of a successful year for Rioja, with the region's Control Board announcing a record year for sales globally in 2014. Here in the UK, Rioja has seen value growth increase by 9.5%, outpacing the wider UK market and accounting for 4% of the value of the UK market. Rioja’s position as Spain’s flagship region is stronger than ever with Rioja’s value share increasing by 11% to 46% of Spain as a whole. In addition to this, a poll carried out by Wine Intelligence in March found that Rioja is the number one still wine region in terms of conversion in the on-trade and is over 10 percentage points ahead of its nearest rival Beaujolais.
