Rioja wine tasting with educator Laura Clay
With 2016 coming to a close just over a month ago, many wine-lovers have made the decision to start 2017 by drinking less, but drinking better. This is something that comes naturally to members of local wine clubs across the country. Rioja Educator, Laura Clay, recently presented a range of diverse Rioja wines to two long-standing wine groups in Buckinghamshire.
After introducing Spain’s largest fine wine region and discussing some its geography and history, the first group tasted a diverse range of wines. Members tasted and enjoyed every one of the wines shown; from zingy white wines, rosé and a range of reds, then the floor was opened to questions and the Inspiración de Valdemar was voted wine of the night.
At Chalfont and Amersham Wine Club, fifty wine connoisseurs gathered to taste and discuss a selection of Riojas. The existence of white and rosé Rioja came as a pleasant surprise to some, and the consensus was that every one of the wines was a winner.
After rigorous tasting, Chalfont and Amersham Wine Club voted the Fernández de Piérola Gran Reserva their wine of the month. One member said: ‘the wines were super - not a poor one amongst them. There was such a great and interesting selection.’
Following the tastings, Laura Clay said: ‘Rioja is well-known and well-liked across the UK, but even so, the overriding factor which came out of both tastings was that ALL the wines tasted were appreciated, and there was an overall high quality. Also, that the diversity of styles of Rioja is still underestimated.
