  • Exports made up 35% of Rioja sales over the 12 months from April 2016 to March 2017.
  •  For the year ending March 2017, 90.4% of global Rioja exports were red, 4.4% rosé, and 5.2% white.
  • Global Rioja exports were made up of 46.2% of Sin Crianza wines, 22.0% Crianza, 27.0% Reserva and 5.0% Gran Reserva over the past year (Rioja Exporters Group stats to March 2017).

UK Sales

Exports to the UK

  • The UK remains Rioja’s largest export market, accounting for 34% of exports. Germany is the second largest market, with 16% of exports (Rioja Exporters Group stats to March 2017).
  • 56.9% of exports to the UK are Sin Crianza wines, 13.6% are Crianza, 25.8% Reserva and 3.7% Gran Reserva (Rioja Exporters Group stats to March 2017).

Volume and value

  • Rioja volumes have begun to stabilise and plateau in the last 12 months (-1.9%) after a long and sustained period of growth. This is in contrast to the general UK market which has declined by -2.1% and the Spanish category which has declined by -10.4% over the year (Nielsen MAT to 31.12.16).
  • Rioja value has remained static at £227m with a marginal dip of -0.1% against the previous year, outpacing the wider UK market which fell by -1.2%, and the Spanish category, which saw decline in value of -7.4% over the same period (Nielsen MAT to 31.12.16). The above two points demonstrate the region’s consistent performance against a backdrop of more challenging circumstances.
  • Rioja now accounts for 3.5% of the volume of the UK market and 4.3% of the value of the UK market. These shares have remained relatively stable relative to the previous 12-month period (Nielsen MAT to 31.12.16).
  • Within the Spanish category, Rioja continues to assert its dominance as Spain’s flagship wine region, and now accounts for almost half of Spanish value at an impressive 49.4% (up 8.7% YOY) and 38.6% of Spanish volume (up 10.4% YOY).

Average price

  • Rioja continues to outperform the wider market in terms of average price occupying the highest place for average price within the Spanish category.
  • The average price for Rioja currently sits at £6.66 per bottle, up 1.7% year on year. This figure is 23% higher than the average across the wine market as a whole (£5.42) and 28% higher than the rest of the Spanish category (£5.20) (Nielsen MAT to 31.12.16).
  • Over 82% of Rioja is sold at over £6, compared to less than 26% across the Spanish category and wider UK market (Nielsen MAT to 31.12.16), reinforcing consumers’ trust in the region demonstrated in their willingness to trade up when it comes to purchasing wines from Rioja.

White Rioja

  • White Rioja has increased its market share by 22.7% to 5.4%, indicating that consumers are increasingly interested in exploring the diversity Rioja has to offer. White wine shares within the Spanish category continue to hold between a fifth and a quarter of the market share – at 23.1% - demonstrating the opportunity that exists for Rioja to grow representation in this category (Nielsen MAT to 31.12.16).
