Rioja 10 x 10 returns to London

September 2017

The Wines from Rioja 10 x 10 Trade Tasting will this year be held on 3rd October at Banking Hall, London. Launched in 2015, 10 x 10 brings together a collection of some of Rioja’s top wines, blind tasted and selected by a panel of leading experts from across the wine trade. The tasting showcases the 10 best wines in 10 different categories, and features both wines currently in the UK market as well as those seeking representation.

Wines were blind tasted by an expert panel chaired by Tim Atkin MW and Sarah Jane Evans MW. Judges identified the top 10 wines in each of the following categories:

  • Unoaked white
  • Oaked white
  • Rosado
  • Crianza
  • Reserva (£10 - £15)
  • Reserva (over £15)
  • Gran Reserva
  • Non-Tempranillo red
  • Generic Wines over £15
  • Wines in retail

The line-up of wines offers the UK trade an opportunity to taste the growing diversity in the region; co-chair Tim Atkin MW said, ‘the 10 x 10 competition provides a wonderful insight into current and developing styles of Rioja’. Attendees can expect to taste through the growing number of non-Tempranillo wines made from single varietal Graciano, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Maturana Tinta. Referring to white Rioja’s bright future, co-chair Sarah Jane Evans MW commented, ‘a number of oaked whites are modern classics and show the exciting promise for this category.’

Rioja 10 x 10 will be followed in the evening by Rioja 10 x 10: Wine x Tapas, a consumer event in partnership with Basque-inspired restaurant, Donostia Social Club.  The event will allow attendees to taste the full list of top 100 wines and to bring the quality and diversity of Rioja to the attention of customers. Guests will also have the opportunity for a more in depth look into Rioja with wine walks hosted by Sarah Jane Evans MW.

Ricardo Aguiriano, Marketing Director for the Consejo Regulador DOCa Rioja commented: ‘We have created Rioja 10 by 10: Wine x Tapas to engage directly with consumers. We also wanted to create an authentic experience for our guests and draw attention to Rioja’s food matching ability by partnering with an authentic Spanish tapas restaurant. This is set to be a fantastic evening.’
