General Background

  • Exports made up 37.9% of Rioja sales over the 12 months from November 2016 to October 2017.
  • For the year ending October 2017, 89.5 % of global Rioja exports were red, 4.5% rosé, and 6.0% white.
  • Global Rioja exports were made up of 47.6% of Sin Crianza wines, 21.2% Crianza, 26.6% Reserva and 4.6% Gran Reserva over the past year (Rioja Exporters Group stats to October 2017).


UK Sales

Exports to the UK

  • The UK remains Rioja’s largest export market, accounting for 34% of exports. Germany is the second largest market, with 15% of exports (Rioja Exporters Group stats to October 2017).
  • 60.0% of exports to the UK are Sin Crianza wines, 12.8% are Crianza, 23.9% Reserva and 3.3% Gran Reserva (Rioja Exporters Group stats to October 2017).


Volume and value

  • Rioja volumes have begun to stabilise and plateau in the last 12 months (-3.2%) after a long and sustained period of growth. This is in contrast to the Spanish category which has declined by -7.4% (Nielsen MAT to 17.06.17).
  • Rioja value has remained static at £226.6m with a marginal dip of -0.1% against the previous year, outpacing Spanish category, which saw decline in value of -3.7% over the same period (Nielsen MAT to 17.06.17). This point demonstrate the region’s consistent performance against a backdrop of more challenging circumstances.
  • Rioja now accounts for 3.48% of the volume of the UK market and 4.26% of the value of the UK market. These shares have remained relatively stable relative to the previous 12-month period (Nielsen MAT to 17.06.17).
  • Within the Spanish category, Rioja continues to assert its dominance as Spain’s flagship wine region, and continues to account for almost half of Spanish value at an impressive 49.4% and 38.6% of Spanish volume


Average price

  • Rioja continues to outperform the wider market in terms of average price occupying the highest place for average price within the Spanish category.
  • The average price for Rioja currently sits at £6.75 per bottle, up 1.3% year on year. This figure is 18.4% higher than the average across the wine market as a whole (£5.59) and 21.3% higher than the rest of the Spanish category (£5.31) (Nielsen MAT to 17.06.17).
  • Over 85.8% of Rioja is sold at over £6, compared to 28% across the Spanish category and 24% for the wider UK market (Nielsen MAT to 17.06.17), reinforcing consumers’ trust in the region demonstrated in their willingness to trade up when it comes to purchasing wines from Rioja.


White Rioja

  • White Rioja has increased its market share by 53.8% to 6.4%, indicating that consumers are increasingly interested in exploring the diversity Rioja has to offer. White wine shares within the Spanish category continue to hold a quarter of the market share – at 23.4% - demonstrating the opportunity that exists for Rioja to grow representation in this category (Nielsen MAT to 17.06.17).
