General Background

 

  • Exports made up 29.4% of Rioja sales over the 12 months from January 2017 to January 2018.
  • Global Rioja exports were made up of 47.6% of Sin Crianza wines, 21.5% Crianza, 26.4% Reserva and 4.5% Gran Reserva over the past year (Rioja Exporters Group stats to January 2018).
  • For the year ending January 2018, 89.1 % of global Rioja exports were red, 4.6% rosé, and 6.3% white.

 

UK Sales

Exports to the UK

  • The UK remains Rioja’s largest export market, accounting for 32.3% of exports. Germany is the second largest market, with 15.5% of exports. (Rioja Exporters Group stats to January 2018).
  • 61.2% of exports to the UK are Sin Crianza wines, 12.3% are Crianza, 23.6% Reserva and 2.9% Gran Reserva (Rioja Exporters Group stats to January 2018).

 

Volume and value

  • Rioja has increased in volume by 0.7%, in comparison to the last reporting period where the category had declined. Rioja volume sales reached 25,627,896 litres in 2017 and continues to account for 3.6% of the volume and 4.3% of the value of the UK market. (Nielsen MAT to (Nielsen MAT to 31.12.17)
  • This growth of the Rioja category is also seen in value which increased by 2.7% to £232million, outperforming the total market. This is a strong recovery from 2016 when Rioja experienced a marginal dip of -£0.1% value at £227million. (Nielsen MAT to 31.12.17)
  • Rioja has maintained its share of volume within the Spanish category and continues to account for 37.8% of Spanish volume. (Nielsen MAT to 31.12.17)
  • Rioja is still maintaining its dominance as Spain’s flagship wine region accounting for almost half of Spanish value at 48.5%, a slight decrease from 49.4% in 2016. (Nielsen MAT to 31.12.17)

 

Average price

  • Rioja continues to outperform the wider market in terms of average price occupying the second highest place for average price within the Spanish category after Bierzo.
  • The average price for Rioja currently sits at £6.79 per bottle, up 1.95% year on year. This figure is 16.9% higher than the average across the still wine market as a whole which stands at £5.64, and 22.1% higher than the rest of the Spanish category which is currently £5.29.(Nielsen MAT to 31.12.17).
  • Just over 82% of Rioja is sold at over £6 in comparison to the Spanish category where 29.4% of wines are sold over £6, and the wider UK market (27.4%) (MAT to 31.12.18), reinforcing consumers’ trust in the region demonstrated in their willingness to trade up when it comes to purchasing wines from Rioja.

 

White and Rosé Rioja

  • White Rioja continued its upward trend for the third consecutive year, with value sales up by 64.3% and volume sales up 60.8%. White Rioja now makes up 7.3% of Rioja by value and 8.0% of Rioja by volume.
  • Volume of Rioja rosé has also increased by 42.3%, recovering from a slight dip in sales in 2016. Rosé now makes up 1.2% of Rioja sales by volume and 1% of Rioja sales by value.
