National Red Wine Day 2018

National Red Wine Day with Wines from Rioja - 28th August 2018

There’s no better way to celebrate this year’s National Red Wine Day than with a lovely red Rioja wine and today, we’re taking you through the different red wine styles found in Spain’s most famous wine region.

Rioja is located around 80 miles south of Bilbao and it’ unique geographic location makes it perfect for wine production, with the surrounding mountains moderating both the cooling effects of the Atlantic, and the intense heat of the Mediterranean.

Home to over 600 wineries, Rioja is justifiably most famous for its red wines and we’ve pulled together an easy-to-follow red Rioja wine guide with some delicious food pairings to serve alongside.

Generico – No ageing required. This classification guarantees the origin and vintage of the wine. Pair with light fresh food and avoid strong overpowering flavours.

Crianza – Aged for a total of two years, including 12 months in oak and 12 months in bottle before release. Pair with lighter meats, pastas and tapas(!).

Reserva – Aged for a total of three years, including a minimum of 12 months in oak and 6 months in bottle. Pair with lamb, BBQ foods and pork.

Gran Reserva - Aged for a total five years, including a minimum of 24 months in oak and 24 months in bottle. Pair with rich winter stews, duck confit and game.
