Indies celebrate Shop Rioja 2017


This October, over 100 enthusiastic independent merchants across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland took part in the Shop Rioja promotion offering customers impressive discounts, Rioja tastings, food and wine matching dinners and much more to highlight Spain’s flagship wine producing region.

After a very difficult selection process, we wish a huge congratulations to the winners:


Small Merchant Winner: Mumbles Fine Wines

Mumbles Fine Wines in Swansea organised an impressive series of activities for the Shop Rioja campaign, including a Rioja wine dinner, weekly in-store tastings on Saturdays, prize draws for costumers following a Rioja purchase, and a Rioja Alta wine tasting coinciding with the winery’s 75th anniversary. The shop also offered a 10% discount on all Rioja wines during October, and a special 15% on a ‘Rioja wine of the day’. Mumbles Fine Wines also impressed us with their extensive range of Riojas and efforts on social media including posts featuring a brand new Rioja each day. We would like to recognise their efforts in educating their customers about the diversity of Rioja wines, whilst also striving to increase sales throughout the duration of the campaign.


Large Merchant Winner: Corks Out

The northwest-based merchant has won this year’s award thanks to their busy calendar of events, plus discounts, staff incentives, and their imaginative use of point of sale items. With Rioja tastings across four different locations in Timperley, Knutsford, Alderley Edge and Stockton Heath, Corks Out customers were offered the opportunity to sample and also learn about Spain’s flagship wine region from staff. The team also prepared a dedicated Rioja newsletter which was sent out to a strong consumer database in order to generate hype around the promotion. Staff were encouraged to join in on the #ShopRioja photo competition and receive a prize for the best picture. We were also impressed by their strong range of wines from Rioja which saw sales go up by 150% during the promotion.
