General Background

  • Exports made up 37.1% of Rioja sales over the 12 months from December 2017 to November 2018.
  • Global Rioja exports were made up of 46.9% of Sin Crianza wines, 22.5% Crianza, 25.9% Reserva and 4.7% Gran Reserva over the past year.
  • For the year ending November 2018, 88.4% of global Rioja exports were red, 6.6 were white and 5.0% rosé.

UK Sales

Exports to the UK

  • The UK remains Rioja’s largest export market, accounting for 31.0% of exports. Germany is the second largest market, with 14.7% of exports.
  • 61.6% of exports to the UK are Sin Crianza wines, 12.8% are Crianza, 22.4% Reserva and 3.1% Gran Reserva.

Average price

  • Rioja continues to outperform the wider market in terms of average price, occupying the second highest place for average price within the Spanish category.
  • The average price for Rioja currently sits at £6.89 per bottle, up 2.2% year on year. This is against a backdrop of declining price for the Spanish market as a whole, where average price per bottle is £5.29, down -0.39% year on year.
  • Just over 82% of Rioja is sold at over £6 in comparison to the Spanish category where 29.7% of wines are sold over £6, and the wider UK market (28.9%), reinforcing consumers’ trust in the region demonstrated in their willingness to trade up when it comes to purchasing wines from Rioja.

Volume and value

  • Rioja has decreased in volume by 2.4%. This is in line with an overall decline in UK of -2%.
  • Rioja accounts for 3.5% of the volume and 4.2% of the value of the UK market.
  • Rioja has maintained its share of volume within the Spanish category and continues to account for 36.3% of Spanish volume.
  • Rioja maintains its dominance as Spain’s flagship wine region accounting for almost half of Spanish value at 47.3%.
  • The value of Rioja saw a very marginal decrease by -0.3% to £225.9m, compared to £226.5m in June 2017.  The marginal value decline reflects that spend per bottle of Rioja has increased from £6.74 to £6.89 making it the second fastest-growing price point increase after Bierzo.

White and Rosé Rioja

  • White Rioja continued its upward trend for the fourth consecutive year, with value sales up by 34.9% and volume sales up 32.0%.
  • White Rioja now makes up 7.9% of Rioja by value (up from 5.9% in June 2017) and 8.7% of Rioja by volume (up from 6.4% in June 2017).
  • Volume of Rioja rosé has also increased by 41.0%, the second period of growth, and up 43.5% by value.
  • Rosé now makes up 1.4% of Rioja sales by volume (up from 1.0% in June 2017) and 1.3% of Rioja sales by value (up from 0.9% in June 2017).
