General Background

- Exports made up 37% of Rioja sales over the 12 months from April 2012 to March 2013, a one per cent increase on the previous 12 months.

- Global exports of Rioja grew steadily over 2012, with volume growth of 7% over the period from April 2012 to March 2013.

- For the year ending March 2013, 90% of global Rioja exports were red, 5% rosé, and 5% white.

- Global Rioja exports were made up of 46% of Sin Crianza wines, 23% Crianza, 27% Reserva and 4% Gran Reserva over the past year (Rioja Exporters Group stats to March 2013).

- The strongest performers on the export markets have been Sin Crianza and Reserva wines which have seen growth of 18.82% and 9.57% respectively over the last 12 months.

UK Sales

- The UK remains Rioja’s largest export market, accounting for 33% of exports. Germany is the second largest market, with 19% of exports (Rioja Exporters Group stats to March 2013).

- 53% of exports to the UK are Sin Crianza wines, 13% are Crianza, 32% Reserva and 3% Gran Reserva (Rioja Exporters Group stats to March 2013).

- Brits bought 2.64m 9l cases of Rioja over the period December 2011 – December 2012 (Nielsen MAT to 8.12.12) with a value of £188m; an increase of 4% in volume and 9% in value on the previous year. Rioja is outperforming the rest of the UK wine market, which remains fairly static, with a decline of –3% in volume, and growth of just 2% in value over the same period.

- Rioja makes up 29% of all Spanish wine sales by volume in the UK and around 3% of the UK wine market as a whole (Nielsen MAT to w.e. 08.12.12)

- Rioja fetches a higher price (£5.94 per bottle) than the UK average bottle of wine (£4.97) and considerably higher than the £4.61 average price per bottle of Spanish wine. Across all of Spain’s winegrowing regions, Rioja commands the highest per bottle price, and no other major Spanish region is growing faster in this respect (Nielsen MAT to 08.12.12).

- Rioja remains Spain’s flagship premium wine, accounting for 37% of Spain’s value against a volume share of 29%.

- While the top 10 Rioja brands account for just over half of the volume of Rioja wine sold in this country, smaller producers outside the top 30 grew their share by 86% in the last year (Nielsen MAT to 08.12.12).

- Rioja has once again shown a strong performance at premium price points - 98% of Rioja wines are sold at over £5 (compared to just 35% across the market as a whole), and there has been rapid growth of 371% in the £10 + category over the last 12 months (Nielsen MAT to 08.12.12).

- The growth of white Rioja represents a great opportunity for the category, with growth of 17% over the last year, accounting for nearly 7% of Rioja wine sold in the UK – its largest share in recent years. (Nielsen MAT to 08.12.12).
