Rioja Tapas Fantasticas – A Taste of Spain on the Southbank

Wines from Rioja’s award winning food and wine festival returns for a seventh year with an exciting line-up of new features

If you’re looking for a taste of authentic Spanish food and wine in London this summer, you’ll find it hard to come across anything better than Rioja Tapas Fantasticas. Brought to you by Wines from Rioja, this free two festival celebrating Rioja wine, Spanish food and lifestyle takes place on Saturday 14th  and Sunday 15th  June 2014, with pop-up offerings from some of London’s best tapas restaurants, as well as over forty Rioja wineries who’ll be bringing their wines to the heart of the capital for the weekend.

Now in its seventh year, the ever popular festival takes inspiration from Calle Laurel, the renowned tapas crawl in the heart of Rioja; Spain’s best loved wine region and gastronomic capital. Every weekend, Calle Laurel sees people wandering from bar to bar, enjoying a different tapa accompanied by a glass of Rioja. At Rioja Tapas Fantasticas you can recreate this experience on London’s Southbank; why not try your own Spanish-style tapas crawl with seared scallops with Spanish ratatouille and green chilli sauce from Donostia Social Club, deliciously matched with a glass of oaked white Rioja, then move onto a tapas dish of chiccarones de candiz* (slow cooked pork belly with cumin and lemon) from Morito with an intense and spicy Rioja Reserva or lamp chops with rosemary alioli from Bravas Tapas, equally well matched with an intense and silky Gran Reserva.

Last year’s event saw over 12,000 food and wine enthusiasts come to Potters Fields Park by Tower Bridge to experience the two day festival, and this year promises to be better than ever., Wine experts Olly Smith and Susy Atkins will bring a fun and informal introduction to Rioja wines with a packed schedule of wine tasting workshops, and small group wine walks. Elsewhere Rioja Tapas Fantasticas will this year unveil a brand new interactive food and wine matching experience, the Rioja and Foods from Spain Tapas Theatre. Set in an intimate environment echoing a Spanish tapas bar, visitors to this feature will get the opportunity to experience the Spanish tapas culture first hand, with a busy schedule of masterclasses pairing Rioja wines with Spanish delicacies. An outstanding line-up of Spanish food experts and chefs will offer an in-depth insight into subjects as diverse as Spanish charcuterie, olive oil, Spanish cheeses, and the use of spices such as saffron and pimentón in Spanish cuisine, alongside lively cookery demonstrations, allowing visitors to sample and match the food cooked in front of them with an array of Rioja wines.

The festival is free to attend, with visitors encouraged to purchase a wine glass with four tokens which can be exchanged for samples of stunning Rioja wines. Visitors will also be able to purchase further glasses of wine and tapas dishes from all exhibiting restaurants and wineries throughout the day.

To whet your appetite ahead of the festival, Wines from Rioja will be bringing the Spanish tapas culture to London with the introduction of Taste Tapas Fantasticas. From 19th May until 16th June, some of London’s leading restaurants across the culinary spectrum will be offering a complimentary tapa or light dish with every glass of Rioja purchased. Among the top names involved are Ametsa, Anise at Cinnamon Club, Bread Street Kitchen, Fino, Merchant’s Tavern, 1 Lombard Street, plus many more. Wines from Rioja will also be offering rewards at Rioja Tapas Fantasticas for diners taking advantage of Taste Tapas Fantasticas via a loyalty card which can be collected at any participating restaurant over the promotional period.
