Wines from Rioja launches Christmas advent calendar app!
This month, Wines from Rioja is celebrating the festive season by running daily competitions on The Rioja Christmas Countdown app.
Facebook users can stop by the Wines from Rioja Facebook page every day throughout December to see what is behind each window for a chance to win some fantastic Spanish foodie prizes, from Rioja wines to go with Christmas lunch to luxury Spanish hampers packed with festive treats.
Daily clues will be revealed from @RiojaWine_UK and via the Wines from Rioja Facebook page. 


Shop Rioja 2014 Winners 


Independent merchants across the UK turned October into Rioja month this year, with promotions, events and tastings to celebrate Shop Rioja. We hope you had a chance to pop in your local store in October to enjoy some Rioja and learn more about the region and the wines!

All participating retailers did a fantastic job sharing their passion and enthusiasm for Rioja but we are pleased to announce that the following two retailers emerged triumphant:

Fresh and Delicately Spiced Keralan Vegetable Curry 


Rioja match: Selected by Sarah Jane Evans MW
This spicy winter warmer is packed with vegetables and is even a great base for some leftover Christmas turkey – the perfect match to a light, refreshing, young white Rioja.  
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes   
Serves: 4-6 
3 tbsp sunflower oil
1 aubergine cut into chunks
2 tsp mustard seeds
15 curry leaves
1 onion, finely sliced
4 garlic cloves, finely sliced
1 x 2.5cm piece of ginger, finely sliced
1 green chilli, finely chopped
1 tbsp chilli powder
1 tsp turmeric
750g butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and roughly chopped
2 courgettes, cubed
400ml tin coconut milk
400g tin chopped tomatoes
400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
100g green beans, trimmed and halved
Handful of coriander
Heat ½ tbsp oil in a large pan, preferably non-stick, and brown half the aubergines for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crisp all over. Scoop onto a plate; repeat with more oil and the remaining aubergines. Set the aubergines aside until later.

In the same pan heat the remaining oil and fry the mustard seeds with the curry leaves until the seeds start to pop. Add the onion, garlic, ginger and chilli, and cook on a medium heat for 5 minutes, until softened. Mix together the chilli powder and turmeric with a splash of water, and then stir into the pan. Fry for one minute. 

Add the squash, courgette and two tablespoons of the coconut milk and stir until covered with the spice mix. Add the remaining coconut milk and tomatoes. Season to taste.

Bring to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes. Add the aubergine, chickpeas and green beans and continue to cook for a further 5 minutes or until the vegetables are cooked and the sauce is reduced.

Celebrate a Spanish Christmas
Celebrate La Noche Buena (Christmas Eve) with a delicious family meal, eat a grape with each chime of the clock at midnight on New Year’s Eve and make your presents last until Epiphany with the arrival of the Los Reyes Magos (the Three Kings).

However you choose to enjoy the festive season, make sure you have a glass of Rioja in hand – salud!
