Rioja 2015 statistics – July

General Background

  • Exports made up 38% of Rioja sales over the 12 months from June 2014 to May 2015, compared with 36% last year. 

  • For the year ending May 2015, 90% of global Rioja exports were red, 4.7% rosé, and 5.3% white.

  • Global Rioja exports were made up of 45.8% of Sin Crianza wines, 22.7% Crianza, 27.1% Reserva and 4.4% Gran Reserva over the past year (Rioja Exporters Group stats to May 2015).

  • All classifications are experiencing volume growth on the export markets with Crianza and Reserva performing the strongest (6.46% and 7.58% growth respectively) over the last 12 months.

UK Sales

Exports to the UK

  • The UK remains Rioja’s largest export market, accounting for 34% of exports. Germany is the second largest market, with 18% of exports (Rioja Exporters Group stats to May 2015).

  • 52% of exports to the UK are Sin Crianza wines, 17% are Crianza, 28% Reserva and 3% Gran Reserva (Rioja Exporters Group stats to May 2015).

Volume and value 

  • Rioja volumes have grown in the last 12 months (+5.9%) in contrast to the general UK market which has declined by -3.0% and the Spanish category which has lost -10.7% of its volume over the year. Rioja now accounts for 3% of the volume of the UK market (Nielsen MAT to 6.12.14).

  • Rioja value has continued to grow at a rapid pace in the last year, and is now at £220m – an increase of 9.9%, compared to 6.7% last year, and outpacing the wider UK market which fell by -0.2%, and the Spanish category, which declined in value by -6.4% over the same period. Rioja now accounts for 4% of the value of the UK market (Nielsen MAT to 6.12.14).

  • Rioja’s position as Spain’s flagship region is stronger than ever – Rioja represents 34% of Spanish volume (up 17.2% YOY) and 44% of Spanish value (up 17.4% YOY) – shares which have shown double-digit growth as well as demonstrating Rioja’s tendency to over-index at higher price points, indicating consumers’ willingness to spend more on wines from this region (Nielsen MAT to 6.12.14)

Average price

  • Rioja continues to outperform the wider market in terms of average price occupying the second highest place for average price within the Spanish category behind Bierzo. Rioja commands the highest average price per bottle of the major Spanish wine producing regions.

  • The average price for Rioja currently sits at £6.10 per bottle an increase of 1.8% year on year. This figure is 11% higher than the average across the wine market as a whole (£5.48) and 22% higher than the rest of the Spanish category (£5.00) (Nielsen MAT to 6.12.14).

  • 87% of Rioja is sold at over £5, compared to 54% across the market as a whole. Sales at higher price points are showing growth, with those wines in the £6 - £9.99 category growing by 37 (Nielsen MAT to 6.12.14).

Brands and white Rioja

  • The top 10 Rioja brands account for 64% of the volume of Rioja wine sold in this country and own label Rioja wines now account for 14% of the market – a 30% increase on last year (Nielsen MAT to 6.12.14).
